Athens, Greece (2015)
As a Freshman at Penn State University I had the opportunity to participate in the Athens Program, through which I traveled to, and spent three months in, Athens, Greece, taking classes dedicated to my Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies major. Due to the fact that I had been completing independent research on ancient Greece and its mythology since I was eight years old, having this opportunity to travel to Greece and immerse myself so completely in its culture was truly a dream come true. Taking five classes at the Athens Centre with our faculty leader Professor Stephanie Larson and our other professors was priceless, and being able to actually travel to the areas we were studying in class, and see the artifacts which helped archaeologists and historians to understand what we now know about the past, was simply something which cannot be compared to reading a page or seeing a picture. For, if a picture says a thousand words, seeing something in real life is an encyclopedia.
We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel across Greece to places such as Naufplio, Franchthi cave, Meteora, Mycenae, Sparta, Olympia (where we got to run on the original Olympic track), and have class atop the Acropolis. It is these such experiences which merely added to my interest in classics and archaeology, which is entirely insatiable.
I absolutely loved Greece, its culture, and its people and I truly thank the Athens program and those at the Athens Centre for such a wonderful and fulfilling experience!
